The origin of Lunar New Year in Vietnam<\/b><\/p>\n
Vietnamese people have always been proud of being a wet rice civilization with a history of ten thousand years. From old times, because of the need for agricultural cultivation, the time in a year was divided into 24 phases. For each of these phases was a moment of transition. “Tiet Nguyen Dan” is the most important period because it was the beginning of a cycle of cultivation and planting. And the “Tiet Nguyen Dan” was also the original name of Tet Nguyen Dan (Lunar New Year).<\/span><\/p>\n The name “Lunar New Year (Tet Nguyen Dan)” originated from China. In China, the word “Nguyen” means the beginning, the word “Dan” means early morning. “Nguyen Dan” is the first morning of a new year. The word “Tet” was called by Vietnamese people replacing the word “Tiet”.<\/span><\/p>\n There were several opinions that VietNam’s Lunar New Year originated from China. However, this concept was not necessarily correct because the way of calculating the lunar calendar of Vietnam was different from that of China. According to our country’s legend, it was from the Hong Bang dynasty building the Van Lang country to the reign of Kinh Duong Vuong, then Kinh Duong Vuong gave birth to Lac Long Quan and this king got married to Au Co to give birth to Hung Vuong. From that inception, Vietnamese people have celebrated Tet holiday with the birth of “Chung cake” and “Day cake” as a proof.<\/span><\/p>\n The Lunar New Year begins on December 23 of the lunar calendar and lasts until the seventh day of Tet holiday (January 7 of the lunar calendar) in which January 1st, 2nd and 3rd belong to the new year.<\/span><\/p>\n The meaning of traditional Lunar New Year<\/b><\/p>\n Each of us also keeps in good memories of Tet holiday. For Vietnamese people, the Lunar New Year is not only a transition between the old year and the new year, but also contains the quintessence of Vietnamese culture. Vietnamese people, no matter how far they work, they always try to come back to their homeland to reunite with their families. They temporarily forgot the pressure of work and life to come back to their homeland with a relaxed and joyful spirit.<\/span><\/p>\n This was also the period of the transition of Heaven and Earth and humans would be closer to the gods of heaven and earth (according to the Eastern concept). This was an opportunity to express gratitude and respect to the gods and ancestors, and pray for a year of timely rain and favourable weather. This occasion was also to “say goodbye” to bad luck of the old year to welcome the good fortune and happiness for a new beginning.<\/span><\/p>\n In addition, this was a reunion day, family members were reunited. The most wonderful time of the year. Everyone in the family refreshes their feelings and spirit and bonds with each other. They wish each other the best for the new year.
